Invisible braces offer a painless, non-invasive way of straightening teeth without adversely impacting upon your life-style. In many cases, invisible braces can replace the intrusive traditional metal wires that have long been used by orthodontists. The system uses 3D modelling to create a set of clear aligners or “clear braces” that fit the teeth exactly. Over time, the braces are used to gently push the teeth back into the correct location, successfully closing gaps and re-aligning crooked positioning. Tooth straightening is often associated with teenagers but recent treatments are also very suitable for correcting tooth alignment problems in older people. There are a number of different types of invisible braces but all work with similar principles. Popular brand names include ‘Invisalign’, ‘Inman Aligner’ and ‘Fastbraces’ – we will advise the best system to use on a case-by-case basis.
How does the system work?
Typically the clear braces are worn for up to 22 hours per day and are removed for eating and brushing your teeth
Over time, your teeth are gradually straightened by the braces
The aligners are typically changed every two to three weeks
You visit your dentist or orthodontist for regular progress checks
Full treatment typically takes 6 to 12 months but more complex re-alignment can take a little longer
Advantages of Clear Braces
Clear braces are more comfortable than traditional wired braces which can cause irritation and inflammation. The slight discomfort experienced at the start of treatment is typically overcome very quickly. Invisible braces are also convenient in that they are easily removable and hence avoid the problem of trapped food. Consequently it is much easier to preserve good dental hygiene with invisible braces when compared to the traditional metal wired version.
Clear braces are by their nature far more discreet than old fashioned braces – they are virtually un-noticeable unless inspected close-up. This is the main reason that many adults now opt for tooth alignment as it is far less disruptive to their lifestyle than would be the case with older metal wired braces.
